Personal Statement
Hi, my name is Jamie Hearn and I wanted to introduce myself to all college softball coaches! I am a sophomore at Charlotte Country Day School in Charlotte, NC. I played on the varsity softball team at Country Day last year and I am anxious to begin our spring season. During the freshman season, I was the starting pitcher and cleanup batter. I also helped out the team by playing 3rd base, shortstop, and outfield. I received Offensive MVP and the "All or Nothing" award by participating in pre-season workouts and going to every in-season practice. The season started off great with a standup triple in the first game and a homerun in the next! In addition to playing for my school, I play for Firecrackers NC - Mitchell out of Charlotte, NC. In the summer and fall, we attend a variety of tournaments and college camps. Throughout the off-season, our team stays in shape with weekly team conditioning and personal practice. Every week, I have pitching lessons and also individual pitching practice as well as school pre-season practice and weight room workouts.
My education means everything to me, so I pride myself on having good grades. This year, I am taking an AP class (AP Human Geography), Spanish III, Sculpture I, and a rigorous double math course (Honors Algebra II and Honors Pre-Calculus) along with other core classes. I am deeply involved with NJHS as I was the president and meeting/speaker coordinator in the 2018-19 school year and now the upperclassman adviser. I also participate in Speech & Debate, and I am a member in the Environmental Awareness Club. I would like to major in neuroscience and biology on the Pre-med track.
Additionally, I love to give back to the community. As long as I can remember, I helped out with a program called Room in the Inn. Room in the Inn gives the homeless in Charlotte a place to sleep over the weekends during the winter months. We give them 3 meals, a place to sleep, and a sense of community by long conversations over dinner and breakfast. I also found a way to support the homeless community in Charlotte through my school. Last year I organized a blanket drive for the Men's Homeless Shelter and helped facilitate a homeless luncheon for the holiday.
My determination to overcome obstacles was presented to me when I was four and I lost hearing in my right ear. I learned to read lips and put myself in the best position possible. Then when I was eight and already found my love for sports I lost sight in my left eye. My eye doctor even begged me to stop playing softball! Although my disabilities have caused some trouble, I have fought hard to stop them from deciding my future and my ability to preform on the field or the classroom.
Thank you for your time!
Jamie Hearn
