Personal Statement
I think I would be a good candidate for a Division 1 team because I have good grades, good character, and I am willing to learn new skills to improve myself as a softball player and as a person in general. Although I hope to go to a Division 1 school to play softball, my academics come first. In college, I hope to study meteorology to become a severe weather expert.
I have played softball since I was 8 years old, and have been to the Scot Thomas softball camp at Virginia Tech four times. In my first year, 2010, I got the award of MVP for the camp. In both 2011 and 2015, I got the Gatorade award for Heart, Hustle and Soul. This summer, I attended the Oklahoma Sooner Prospect Camp and the Legendary Softball Showcase in Virginia Beach.
I have been hosting a softball camp in my community for the past three years, beginning in 2012. The camp started as my Girl Scout Silver Award project, but I found that it has a lasting effect on the community and decided to keep it going. Each year, I have three goals for the camp: to inspire younger girls to get/stay involved with softball, to teach the game of softball, and to encourage girls and their families to form travel ball teams. Each year, we have accomplished all three. There is now a 12U team in it's third year due to this camp. I plan to keep hosting it as long as possible because I feel that learning basic skills and getting girls interested in softball at a young age are important.
I also competed in the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition this year, as have done since I was 7. I have been a state finalist 6 out of the 8 years I competed. This year I made it to the National Competition, one of 4 girls my age to make it to this level, where I placed second! I am now coaching other competitors in my area.
This spring was my Sophomore season playing for the Varsity Team at Rockbridge County High School in Lexington, Virginia. I was a strong hitter all year, batting 3rd or 4th in the lineup, and keeping a batting average of above .400 all season. I started every game, in the DP or 1B spot. For my travel ball team, Rockbridge Crush 18U, I am a strong player at 1B and catcher. I also played some at 3B as well. I continue to be a strong hitter in travel ball with a batting average of above .500 for this season so far. In the field, I catch and play first, although catching is my favorite. I enjoy catching more because I get to see a lot of different pitches which helps me as a hitter. However, I am willing to learn new positions.
