Personal Statement
I am Celia Heffington, and I am currently a junior in high school. Although I am homeschooling this year, I start center for the Ozark Hillibillies. This arrangement has worked well for me to focus on college preparation, while continuing to play competitive basketball on the public school level. I ranked first in my class while I was a freshman and sophomore in public school with a 4.0 GPA. I love to learn and plan to pursue a degree in either the medical or business field.
I am a hard working and determined person which helps in the classroom and on the basketball court. One other character quality that sets me apart from others is that I am attentive. I am attentive to my coach when he teaches new plays and I am able to run the plays successfully. I am also attentive to my teammates and their abilities while on the court. Knowing who is hot at the moment and being willing to assist when necessary is an important ability. During the past year, two members of the community have taken special interest in my basketball abilities and have volunteered to practice on specific skills. This was an exciting time for me and I feel that my attentiveness, hard work and determination, along with their willingness to work with me has made a noticeable improvement in my performance. This experience has also increased my desire to succeed and play college ball.
Leadership and communication are two other skills that lend to my success on the court. I feel that I have earned the respect and trust of my fellow teammates. On defense I talk to my teammates. I tell them when to go head and take a risk because I have their back. I warn them when someone is open and needs to be guarded. On offense I communicate by asking for the ball and encouraging my teammates when they have done well and help them not to get discouraged after a mess up. Basketball is all about team play and I believe I am a team player.
I have been a starter on the varsity high school team as a sophomore and as a junior. I have been blessed to play with some very athletic players and we have competed with some of the best teams in the state of Arkansas. We made it to the quarter finals in State this year. This has been an awesome experience for me. I have a strong body which has proven to be a great asset to my team. I can post up and finish at the basket. I excel in post defense and in blocking out and rebounding.
