Desirae Vazquez '16 Recruiting Profile

The reason why basketball is important to me is because I grew up playing the sport. The first time I ever played on a team was in the fourth grade, and after playing in fourth grade I joined the fifth and sixth grade team at my elementary school. I loved the sport even more, so that’s when I decided through middle school and high school that I will continue to join and try out. In high school, as a freshman, I made the JV team and I was a starter. I learned a lot about being a team and becoming sisters with my teammates. The following year I made the Varsity team. It was a different experience for me because I did not get to play much in the beginning, and it was a faster pace than a JV game. However, I did not let that stop me from playing basketball. I joined basketball because I wanted to play, so I started practicing harder, and started working on my offense and defense and shots. Have you ever heard of the quote, “Practice Pays Off,” because it sure does. After practicing a lot, I started playing more. The next year as a junior on varsity, I was a starter and was becoming more experienced and better at my game. During the season my three point shots became more accurate. I broke the record with most three pointers in a single season with 58 three’s. I couldn’t have broken the record without my teammates and coaches. Now I’m second for most three pointers in my career and I am planning on breaking the record this new season, senior year. Basketball is a big part of my life. Basketball has taught me how to be dedicated, disciplined, and determined. Not only am I doing that on the court, however I do that in the classroom as well. In order for me to play the sport I love; I have to keep my grades up and that’s exactly what I do. Also I want to make my family proud in everything that I do.They have been supporting me in every step of the way.
