Personal Statement
I have been playing basketball as long as I can remember. I grew up watching my older sisters playing the sport. One of my sisters went on to play basketball in college, which inspired me to pursue the same goal. I remember watching her when I was ten years old and thinking, "That's what I want to be when I grow up!"
I'll be one of the first ones to tell you that it takes hard work to succeed. I have attended NBC basketball camps every summer since I was in 7th grade. These camps push you to the limit and really make you step up as a player. Attending these camps was always fun because I got to work on different positions than what I normally play.
At my small school, I play mostly the post position. Which is surprising to most people because I am only 5'7". Something my coach always says about me is, "Don't tell April that she isn't 6 foot and 200lbs. She won't believe you!" I am naturally aggressive, and have learned to play against much bigger people. I get after it on offense and defense. I led my team in rebounds for the season. I see the floor very well. In this years season, I was second in the team in assists; right under out point guard. I was also second in the team in steals and deflections. Even though I am a forward, I have the ability to shoot outside, and am fairly effective from the 3-point range as well.
This year my team was fortunate enough to win the Idaho 1A D2 State Basketball Championship. My team only had 6 players. We didn't even have a JV. Because of this, I know how to work hard. With only 6 players, I (as a starter) had to push through fatigue to help my team win. There wasn't many breaks, but we came together as a team and pushed through it. My team had to overcome unbeatable odds, and I am so glad to have been a big part of that.
All that being said, I am at my core, a student athlete. Academics is very important to me, and they will usually take the front seat. Even though academics take the lead, I am very dedicated to sports. I am usually the first to practice and the last to leave. I always strive to be the best that I can be, on and off the court. I believe that you can always improve, and I always work hard to better myself and my team. Being recruited would be a dream come true, and it would help me be successful in gaining an education.
