Personal Statement

My name is Emma Palmer and I am in the class of 2023 at Waukon High School.

Basketball has been my passion since my first year of competitive basketball in 5th grade. While attending a collegiate basketball game at a state university that year, I realized I too wanted to play on that stage. I currently play a 4 or 5 position while continually working to expand my range. I utilize my work ethic, dependability and coachability to improve my skills every opportunity in pursuit of my goal. The phrase "playing as a team" is of utmost importance to my approach to the game. I fully believe a well-balanced team, utilizing everyone's skill set, is the most effective way to build a successful team.

I am also driven in the classroom, where I take a challenging course load consisting of AP and concurrent college classes through Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC). I maintain a 4.0 GPA at both Waukon High School and NICC. I am on track to graduate from NICC with my Associate of Arts degree at the completion of my high school career.

I strive to stay balanced by being active in my school and community. I play volleyball and participate in track and field in addition to playing basketball. I am a member of my school's Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter and the Waukon High School Leadership team. In addition, I am a participant in my church's youth handbell choir and Lutheran Youth Organization (LYO). I am active in my county 4-H, serving as the treasurer of my club and completing projects in a variety of project areas including showing and judging dairy cattle, photography, visual arts, woodworking, and more. I am the secretary of the Allamakee 4-H County Council, a volunteer group of senior 4-Hers who volunteer at our county fair and plan and host activities for younger 4-Hers.

I am a genuine, dependable, respectful, and hardworking teammate and leader for my team. I will carry these qualities I have gained through my volunteer experiences as I continue to the next level. I am looking for a college that offers a high quality education with a family atmosphere where team play brings home championships.
