Personal Statement
Basketball; the sport I have spent hours upon hours playing and loved it with all my heart. Basketball; the sport that I have taken a step back from to help myself grow as an intellectual not only in the classes of Hastings High School, but in the classes of life. Taking time off of Club basketball has given me the time to explore other activities such as Tennis and Volleyball, writing club, tutoring children, going on a mission trip, supporting other sporting teams, and being apart of after school activities. Taking a year off of High School basketball gave me the time to improve my tennis skills, and actually train for basketball as well; it has given me the opportunity to study outside of school for the SAT and really put a focus on my academics. Taking time off of both of these however, has given me something more than just a better GPA. It has given me the time and mental space to build myself into someone who has a strong character. I took my entire Junior year, each month facing new challenges to my character, and built myself into a confident, motivated, and optimistic woman. The most challenging year of my life mentally, I took it and I made it the year life would not beat me down. I took it, and made it the year my GPA did go up. I took it, and I made it the year that I improved my SAT score. I took it, and I made it the year that my character was solid, with the understanding that humans are always adapting to their surroundings. I took it, and made it the year that I accepted and appreciated the break from basketball. I took it, and made it the year that I remembered the feeling of the love of the game and the yearn in my soul to want to be on the court past High School. The break was a necessity and something I cherish. I truly believe it has not only made me a better person, friend, teammate, student, and worker, but also a better basketball player. I aspire to play the game I love at a college I love just as equally.
