Hello, my name is MacKenzie Ream, I am a senior at Sand Creek High School. I have gone to Sand Creek schools for 12 years and have played varsity basketball here at Sand Creek for 4. I have played basketball my whole life, been around the sport my whole life. I went to my first basketball camp when I was 4 years old, my parents have both coached basketball since before I was born. I start playing on my first travel basketball team in 4th grade, I played for Lake Erie Lightning for 6 years under my coach Matthew Benge, and then I played on SouthEast Michigan HoopsSquad for 1 season under Bobby Plummer.
I fell in love with the game from the get go. Being on the court was an environment that I felt myself, I could take control, but I also had to work hard. I didn’t always come completely easy for me, but it was a place I stood out, it became a part of my identity and I loved that.
My basketball career has had its bumps in the road. My freshman year in high school I blew my knee out the first day of tryouts. I went down with a torn ACL and Meniscus, and ended up having to have knee surgery that next month. I was out for 13 months, due to issues and injuries along the comeback. I came back halfway through my sophomore year and once I got back into it, the dream of college basketball came alive again. Fast forward through that season, and my junior year season has just ended. We started to really begin looking at colleges and the opportunities to come when suddenly it was all put on halt. April 2016, I was in a traumatic car accident, I suffered numerous injuries. I was life flighted to Mott’s Children’s Hospital where they saved my life. I sustained a broken skull, bleeding on my brain, fractured vertebrae in my neck and back, other smaller injuries. We weren’t even sure if I was going to make it let alone if I was going to return back to the court. After a long summer of therapy and returning to my life, college basketball became a reality again. I kicked it into gear with my personal trainer and have continued to try and get back to the player I used to be. I love the sport, I would love to further my basketball career. I have great desire and mental strength me to get me through anything. I am strong in my faith and have high morals that lead me and make me who I am.
