Personal Statement
I am Mary Salo. I am a senior at Berne Knox Westerlo. BKW is a small hill town school located in the Helderberg Mountains in the county of Albany. I started here in 8th grade. My teachers and coaches are great! It is very different from the Catholic Elementary School I came from! I started playing basketball when I was very little. My family is very sports oriented. In middle school, I started to grow taller than my classmates. I am 6'1"and I hope I have stopped growing! I am a quick learner. My coaches say I have talent and am a natural athlete. I move well for a center. I love playing basketball and feel I am getting stronger and better with each passing year. My coach described me as silent but violent underneath the basket.
Last year, I made first team for the WAC. I am really good at rebounding and finding the outlet. My work with Craig Forth really helped me with my foot work and finishing. I have had the opportunity to play for the Capitals in Albany, but decided to play for my High School team instead. The more we play together, the better we get as a group. I attended Siena Team Camp and played in summer league this summer. I am working this summer to start saving for college.
I am looking for a college that has a good Libral Arts Program. I am unsure of what path to take at this point in my life. I am leaning towards Human Services, but hope that my college can help me find a career. My Mom is a single Mom. I am the middle of 3 girls. My oldest sister, Erin is attending Rochester Institute of Technology. My younger sister, Kathryn, is 14 and is in 9th grade this year. I have visited schools with Erin and on my own. I have an idea of what I would like in my college. I would like a campus, approximate size 1,200 to 10,000. I would like the opportunity to play sports. This will keep me in shape plus introduce me to new people. As the time gets closer to making a decision about where to go for school, I am finding I want to stay within a few hours from home.
In my spare time, I like to read, go to movies, shop, and swim. I also got a part time job at a local grocery store. I am doing well at school and realize the importance of getting/maintaining good grades. I have enjoyed talking with and visiting some schools already! I realize how quickly this time flies! *My plan with NCSA only allows one video. I submitted my video 3/22/12. The Times Union News Paper in Albany had a lot to say about the BKW team last year. I am really looking forward to what this next year brings!
