Hello!
My name is Maggie Shorma and I have been playing basketball since I was in 1st grade. I have been on my high school’s Varsity team since my freshman year and have been a starter the past three. As a junior, I was selected to the Eastern Dakota Conference All-Star Team. I was also named a team captain of the varsity team last year as a junior (it normally goes to the seniors) and again this upcoming year when I will be a senior.
I have played travel basketball from 5-8th grade. As a freshman, I was invited to be part of a successful AAU team (ND Pro) who participates in AAU tournaments all over the Midwest including the Nike Championship in Chicago and the Tartan National in Minneapolis. It was in that tournament and in my last AAU game I set a personal best and scored 39 points! I have earned a reputation for playing my best in the games that mean the most.
However, I have always considered my personal success to be second to that of the team and my teammates. I am a multi-sport athlete and if you could ask any of my coaches to say one thing about me, they would say I am a great teammate and leader. I get my greatest satisfaction from cheering on my teammates and keeping them motivated. I have always believed that attitude and effort are the most important things for me not only in basketball, but in life! I do everything I can to set an example for others both on and off the court…sometimes this can be at the expense of personal gain.
For example, I am at my best when playing the 2 – shooting guard or 3 - small forward positions, which often gives me a match-up advantage over my opponent because of my size and skills. However, many times I have been asked to bring up the ball, or to play the top position of our 1x3x1 defense, or to defend the opponent’s best player even when they play the post position. This hasn’t always led to personal, or statistical success, but if it will help the team win, I am open to doing whatever is asked of me.
I am fortunate to attend a small, Christian high school that places a VERY strong emphasis on academics. I have worked hard to earn my grades (3.7 GPA) and was honored to be selected as a member of the National Honor Society. We may be a small school, but we compete in the highest division of North Dakota high school athletics.
My goal for the future is to find a college that reflects my personal values, that can provide a strong educational foundation for my eventual career, and who will provide me an opportunity to work – train hard, grow and continue to improve at a sport that I have come to love!
Thank you for your consideration,
Maggie Shorma
