Personal Statement
My name is Jessica Nation and I'm apart of the first ever graduating class of 2020 at Olentangy Berlin High School. I am not originally from Columbus, Ohio, I actually grew up in a town between Dayton and Cincinnati. I moved to the Olentangy School District in fourth grade which was tough for me because everything was so unfamiliar, especially basketball. That year I was too nervous to try out for the travel team so I ended up playing in a rec league. I regret that because it put me behind everyone else in fundamental development. I also was always very tall and skinny, so throughout my whole basketball career I have been working towards getting stronger. It used to be a weakness of mine until freshman year when I joined D1, a sports training facility in Columbus. Not only did D1 make me stronger, it also changed the way I thought about sports and taught me how to put in hard work and be mentally tough. This has come into play when I found out that I was going to be moved from my old high school and into a brand new high school because of redistricting. This is a very rare opportunity because not many people get to attend a brand new high school and be the first ever graduating class. The 2020 junior class is in charge of setting records, making traditions, showing school pride and most of all being leaders. Therefore, being able to be mentally tough when experiencing so many new things and adapting to new situations like new coaches, no senior class, and low participation in sports is very important. Overall, I am excited I to get to compete and lead my team through a season of new beginnings.
