My name is Kayla Smith and I have been playing basketball since I was in second grade. I am 6'2 and play the center position. I have started for my varsity team each year including as a freshman. Last year, in my sophomore season, my team had a very good shot at going to playoffs. Coming from a very small school is an obstacle we all must overcome in itself, but we did not make playoffs that year. We were out by only 6 points. We lost to two teams by just 3 points each. This was a time in my career that I had to overcome and learn from. I will always keep that in the back of my mind to remind me to work hard and that we can achieve that goal. I have been selected as all county for my sophomore year, and I was also selected all conference for my sophomore year. Although I would like to achieve my 1,000 points in my high school career, I am trying hard to beat our current block record of 364. I would hope that in my future collegiate basketball career I could help the team go to playoffs and win a championship. I would also like to try to maintain my blocks.
As a freshman and sophomore I was taking honors classes and even doubled up on math. As a junior I am in 3 AP courses and will be done with all of my high school credits except my English this year. I have made the high honors roll every nine weeks each year since I was a freshman. I plan to take the AP exams and pass with a score of 3 or higher and gain that college credit. Next year I plan on taking at least 2 more AP classes. Outside of school I am also taking advanced Forensic classes at West Virginia University one Saturday a month to help prepare me for my interests. I am a member of Student Council, SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), Peer Court, The Future is Mine, Academic League, FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America), Relay for Life, and National Honors Society. When I take the next step to my college life, I hope to still be a part of some clubs, maybe some new ones that are more based towards my interests. I hope to balance basketball with my grades and maintaining a good GPA well.
