Personal Statement
The sport of basketball has consumed me since the early age of five years old. Both my Mom and Grandmother played ball throughout their school years so I felt as if it was only proper that I follow suite. As I got older, physically I grew even faster and my Dad always knew that his little girl was made for the court. The hype around my size and stature placed basketball at the forefront of my life. I have never been the fastest and I may not even be the strongest link on team but my heart and determination to give 110% has kept me in the game thus far. Growing up, I have encountered a lot of negativity and discrimination based on my God given talents, height, and ability. It's sad to say but most people hate to see me excel, whether it be in sports or academically. As long as I am doing mediocre work or not standing out, I seem to have all the friends a girl could want. My Mother taught me to keep my head held high and that it was okay to branch out from the crowd….. That it is okay to be different. I come from a big family and I've seen my Mother struggle, I've saw her have dreams crushed, and most importantly, despite it all I have watched her persevere. Her determination is my main motivation for wanting more and expecting nothing but. Living in a small town can crush dreams but I am choosing to beat the odds. I sacrifice today for a better tomorrow because childhood is only a second in time when compared to the rest of my life. I made the choice to direct my attention on making the grades, proper peer selection, and community and church involvement. When I grow up, I WILL BE a pediatrician so my love for basketball will be my meal ticket at hopefully getting a full ride scholarship.
