Personal Statement
Sheridan College My name is Brodie Bennett and for the last 13 years of my life I have attended Meeteetse High School, in Meeteetse, Wyoming, population 320. Since I could walk, I have had a ball in my hands because my mom and my aunt coached, so I am what you could call a gym rat. Unfortunately, I did not get tall genes so after watching high school basketball games I would come home and jump, jump, and jump for hours. I have worked hard to set and achieve personal and team goals and I have always tried to improve my skills and knowledge of the game. I started competing in 3 on 3??s at age eight, entered Hoop Shoots, recreation basketball leagues, and finally started playing school sports in 5th grade. I have been fortunate to earn Wyoming 1-A All-State honors for the last two years in basketball, last year I was recognized as the Five Rivers Conference Player of the Year, and since I was a freshman I was named to the All-Conference Teams. I have also been named to the Wyoming 1-A Volleyball team for three years and Track for two years. Even though I have received these fantastic awards none of them are near as important to me as the accomplishments of my team. Last year was the first time Meeteetse had a basketball team compete at state since 1990 and the last year volleyball went to state was in 1989. I think something that I can offer a team is my leadership, ball handling skills and the ability to see the floor, and a strong work ethic. I am a very positive person and can always find the good in every situation and in my coaches and teammates. I consider myself to be a leader on and off the floor. I have many different leadership roles in my school and team including; Student Council President my junior and senior years, FCCLA Vice President, FFA Reporter, M-Club- Treasurer, Volleyball Co-Captain junior and senior years, and Basketball Co-Captain my sophomore and junior years. Since I have grown up in a small town all of my life, I would like to go to a smaller college or university to make the transition easier. I like to get to know people and don??t like to feel lost in a crowd. I also like small teacher to student ratios. I would ideally like to stay in the Rocky Mountains and close to my family. I am looking for schools that have degrees in Outdoor Education/Recreation or Parks and Recreation. My family and I are in need for financial assistance. My mom was a teacher at Meeteetse Schools until her program at the school was riffed due to budget cuts last spring. My dad works for a local construction company and that is our only family income of three kids and my parents. We qualify for free school lunches and Kid Care Insurance so that is helping financially. I do not think I will qualify for FAFSA this next fall however, because my mom taught for half the year and was paid one year for early retirement. This extra income has been used to pay some loans and payments. I have worked a summer job to pay for my own car, sport shoes, camps, and traveling expenses. My athletic goals for my future is play college basketball and become the best basketball player I possibly can. I never want to wonder if I could have played ball, I want to give it my best shot and know that I took advantage of any opportunities I may have. Another goal I have is to pursue a coaching certificate in the game of basketball because after graduating college I would like to become a basketball coach. I would ideally like to be director of a recreation district and coach high school basketball, just like my basketball coach, Mr. Fernandez.
