Hi, My name is Sofina Firouzi and I am a 2022 athlete who is currently a sophomore at Canyon Crest Academy in San Diego, CA.
My goal is to play at a University where I can be successful in both academics and golf. I would like to be apart of a team that wants to win the NCAA championship. I possess the qualities that make a well-rounded student-athlete. I am a natural leader who is focused and determined to achieve my goals. I work hard and put in the time to improve my game. I also have excellent time management skills that allow me to balance school, golf, faith, family, and friends along with my volunteer work. I am an upbeat person who always has a smile on my face, I am a team player and won the 2017 SCPGA Giovanni Villani Sportsmanship Award. I was deeply honored to be recognized for my empathy toward my fellow competitors and for my outstanding attitude on the golf course.
Additionally, this is my second year playing on the girl’s varsity golf team. I am ranked first on our team and helped us qualify for CIF again this year. I made first team all-league as a freshman and sophomore and CIF first team this year. I love the team aspect of the game and I work well with others and encourage my teammates. I attend a rigorous academic public high school which helps prepare me for college.
My hard work is paying off as I am continuously improving in all aspects of my game. The mental aspect of my game is strong. My driver accuracy has improved greatly over the past year as I am now hitting most if not all fairways and I have gained 20 plus yards in distance which is helping me score. My short game is the strongest part of my game and I’m seeing results in my tournament stats with my total putts for the last three tournaments at under 30. My chipping currently is on fire but I am still working on my iron accuracy.
I am fortunate to have an excellent team which consists of my coach Derek Uyeda and my trainer. Derek is a great full swing instructor and specializes in short game. He primarily works with college and professional players and when Xander Schauffele is not playing on tour I have the opportunity to work with him on putting. He is generous with his time and a wonderful mentor.
