My name is Meeya Marquez. I'm a senior at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California. I've been a member of the varsity ladies' golf team for the last 4 years. I've been playing golf competitively for four years, and I often compete in SCPGA, CJG, VCJGA, and AJGA tournaments.
I have one brother and two sisters, and I'm the youngest of the group. We have two dogs, Thor and Odin, and an African Grey parrot, who is 32 years old and has a 4-year-old's vocabulary.
I wasn't always involved in golf. I started playing soccer at five years old. I continued to play club soccer until the end of my eighth-grade year. As I prepared to enter high school, I decided to try out other sports, such as volleyball, track and field, and golf. I liked all three sports, but I was told I should probably look into other low-impact sports to allow me to have a longer competitive playing career and also to be able to play for fun when i get older.
In the summer of 2019, I took my first golf lesson, and I fell in love with the sport. I set specific goals for myself to make sure that I improved in all aspects of the game. I planned to try-out for the Notre Dame girls' team, and I worked really hard over the summer to give myself the best chance possible to be part of the girls' golf team.
My hard work and commitment paid off; I became a member of the golf team during my freshman year (2019-2020). I still had a lot of work to do to win a spot as one of the starting 6. I started my freshman year with an average score of 91. I set a goal to break an average score of 85 by the end of my sophomore year. I met and exceeded that goal. I spend countless hours working with my swing coach and on my own to improve my swing and to stay on the correct swing plane and on target. I spend additional time improving my approach shots outside of 125 yards and under 80 yards, as well as putting.
Last year, I was fortunate enough to be part of the starting 6. Our team had a great year. We were league champions. Our team was named Southern CIF Regional Champions and we were blessed to play in the CIF State Finals at Poppy Hills in Pebble Beach CA. It was a great year for the team.
I am now in my senior year and my average score is 79. My plan is to spend a lot of time with my swing coach. Our time will be spent on accuracy, distance, and swing speed. We will also focus on my short game and putting to lower my score to par or below. Our team aspires to repeat the accomplishments we were able to achieve last year to make this the best senior year that I could ever imagine.
On a personal level, I aspire to secure a BS degree in biology and to enter medical school in the fall of 2027. In addition to my academic goals, I also want to get on a strong women's college golf team and help the team become the best team in their division.
