Personal Statement
To the coach who is looking for a girl with potential:
Hi, my name is Anna Collins. I play for East Union in Afton, Iowa. When I first started playing golf as a freshmen, my dad had to drag me to the golf course. Now you will be hard pressed to find someone that can drag me away from this sport that I love more than life itself.
When I first started playing as a freshmen, I originally went out just so then my tiny 1A school could have a four person team. I started a week after everyone else and played at my first varsity meet three days after my first practice. Although I did not shoot even close to the lowest score, I felt like a winner that day. I just loved to be on the course, playing the game of golf no matter what the outcome was. I was hooked.
I fell madly in love with golf as a freshman. My sophomore year is when I started to become more competitive. At this point, I still had not had any professional training for my golf swing. However, I spent hours before and after practice on the course. I would practice everything from my full swing down to my short game. My time and dedication paid off; my average score 9 & 18 combined score dropped from a 69.14 to a 57.93 (according to QuikStats). I was even the medalist at two of our meets! However, I wanted more.
The summer before my junior year, I attended a Nike junior golf camp at the Legacy Golf Club in Norwalk, Iowa. There I met Rob Randall. In the following winter (January 2018), I began to train once a week with him until May 2018 to improve my golf swing.
The lesson paid off. My junior year, I became even more competitive. I broke into the 40s on 9 hole tournaments and 90s on 18 hole tournaments. As an individual, I placed fourth at the first round of regionals and qualified, along with my team, for the second round. However, the season did not end as I had hoped. At the end, four strokes stood between my team and a chance to play at state. I was devastated.
Over the summer of 2018, I let my heartbreak fuel me to become a better player. I have spent many hours on the course improving my game. As of January 2019, I have started taking weekly lessons again with Rob Randall. I am hungry to improve, I am hungry for golf season to start, and I am hungry for a chance to play at the state tournament.
So, to the coach who is looking for a girl with potential, my name is Anna Collins. I am a hard-working 4.0 student who absolutely adores every aspect of the game of golf. I am extremely coachable and love to have people help me improve my game. In the future, I plan to major in biology and attend medical school following college graduation. My name is Anna Collins, and I love the sport of golf.
