Hello! My full name is Victoria Stephens-Lagos and I am a junior at Mount Carmel Academy in New Orleans, Louisiana. I have lived in South America and my Hispanic culture has influenced my great passion for golf. Growing up, I never had even given a thought to the idea of golf. Golf was for businessmen, not for young women. Although it was my calling all along, I would have never been able to play the sport of my life if I had returned to the United States. After finally being introduced to the sport at 13, I completely fell in love. At the end of the day, not only do I want to play good golf and win more tournaments , I also hope to one day begin programs globally to introduce golf to kids in the places I have lived.
Beginning golf much later than others definitely motivated me to work much harder than those around me. I incorporated myself to clubs and tours immediately to begin growing my game. Through the First Tee program, a club that teaches life skills and morals through golf, I truly grew as a person and as a golfer. I worked up to the highest level of the program, was given an award for highest level of courtesy, and have competed nationally on the New Orleans team.
These opportunities have made me a better teammate, because I am now reliable, understanding, and always happy to help my teammates. Whether its through offering course management advice or a shoulder to cry on, I know how important kindness and loyalty is when being on a team.
Athletically speaking, I have played almost every single sport and started on every single team including: basketball, softball, cabbageball, volleyball, soccer, and cross-country. I have always loved running and exercising, and I am continuing using routine workouts and a much healthier lifestyle. When it comes to golf, I am quick to do anything I can to improve myself. This drive is also seen in my academics. In the 8th grade and my first year of golf, I struggled academically and did not challenge myself. Yet, since then I have taken more difficult courses and raised my GPA.
In total, I am someone who enjoys helping and loving others, but also loves challenging myself in things I love doing. I am reliable, trustworthy, and excited to finally have the opportunity to play college golf!
