One of my earliest memories is of a driving range in Arizona. I was four years old, and all I cared about was swinging my driver as hard as I could. For the next few years, my golf experience was limited to hitting balls with my dad and brother for fun, and eventually moving onto playing actual rounds of golf. We moved to Saint Louis, and I began taking golf lessons and playing more often during the summer, but I wasn’t very serious about the sport yet. That all changed when I joined the MICDS golf team my freshman year.
Slowly but surely, I developed a passion for competitive golf. I was inspired by the older players, especially Katie Mikulec, a senior. She was supportive of all the underclassmen and always provided advice. She was also amazingly humble about her game and had a natural ability to lead others. I decided that I wanted to be that kind of a player and person.
During the season, all I could think about was improving my game. I developed a passion for competing, and ended the season ranked 3rd out of all the varsity players. I got serious about my game by practicing more and competing in tournaments outside of school. I also started taking lessons with my club professional. By sophomore year, I was number one on the varsity team, so it was very disappointing when I did not qualify for state.
Ultimately, I took that disappointment and used it to motivate myself. I am devoting every day this summer to golf: lessons, tournaments, and lots of practice on all parts of my game. In the process, I have learned that I am coachable and that I have a strong work ethic, a competitive spirit, and grit.
Now that I am halfway through high school, I have a strong sense for my educational goals. I want to maintain consistent grades, work individually with my teachers when I have questions, and advocate for myself. When my teachers see me go above and beyond, they know I am committed to my academic success. As for college, I am looking for a campus that is a good fit for me as a scholar and as an athlete. I will need to be a more independent learner and manage my time well, especially if I am playing golf. The effort and energy I put into my work now will pay off in the future.
I have come a long way from that four-year-old who tagged along with her dad and brother to the driving range. As my junior year golf season approaches, I look forward to becoming a leader and mentor on the team, just as the seniors were for me. I am confident that I can achieve this because of my love for the game of golf!
