Personal Statement

Golf is a passion of mine, and it has helped me develop relentless drive, perseverance, team spirit, and a calm demeanor. I enjoy designing and creating physical things with my hands. I am people and team-oriented, and my cultural exposure through traveling the world with my family has shaped me as a compassionate critical thinker. When not golfing, I enjoy working out, baking, and skiing.

I am Siena Maschke, a senior at Laurel School in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and the 2023 OHSAA State Golf Champion. I was selected to the All-Ohio golf team the last two years, Academic All-Ohio Team, and a 4x time member of the All-District 1st Team. I am a three-time MVP and Captain for the Laurel School golf team, the 2023 Top NE Ohio Girls Golfer by Cleveland.com, and named Northern Ohio PGA's Player of the Year and Runner-Up Player of the Year in 2021 and 2022, respectively. My low tournament score this year was 70 (4x), and my GHIN handicap is +2.1. I recently won the Northern Ohio PGA's Kenny Novak Tour Championship. My GPA is 4.25, and I have been elected the Senior Class President.

Academically, I am interested in a business program and intrigued by the high percentage of business students obtaining internships. As a visual and hands-on learner, I am at my best when applying learning in the real world.

I will be a valuable asset with my passion and accomplishments in academics and golf, my leadership and entrepreneurial spirit, and my identity as a critical thinker with a global perspective.

  • 7/24/23 to 7/27/23
  • 7th place finish (74 - 6,200, par 72, 135 slope, 74.6 rating, 96 participants). The top 32 qualifiers move on to the Championship Rounds of Matchplay. In the qualifying round, I finished +2 with a score of 74, coming in 7th place out of 96 players. This qualified me for the championship flight of 32! The Championship Flight was my first time competing in match play. Sadly, I lost my match, but I have learned that match play is a much different mental game, and I cannot get rattled by a lost hole. I am proud that I challenged myself this year on a tough course and a new tournament format. I am already looking forward to playing in this event next year!!
  • Camp/Event
  • Junior Series Tournament - Northern Ohio PGA
  • 7/13/23 to 7/13/23
  • Medalist (70 - 5,710 yards, par 72, 73.5 rating, 129 slope) I played boring golf (smart and safe), which resulted in a good score - 2 under par! I am thrilled to have posted a 70 and broke my current streak of 77, 76, 77, and 76. I stayed focused over the entire round and immediately recovered from adversity. Over this past month, I have worked on different aspects of my game. I struggled with staying focused, playing too aggressively, and making more accurate approach shots. I have practiced hours daily to improve my mental and physical game. My hard work is paying off.
  • Camp/Event
  • 47th Ohio Junior Girls Championship
  • 7/10/23 to 7/11/23
  • 10th place finish (77, 76 - 5,589, par 72, 132 slope, 73.6 rating, 96 participants) I had six birdies throughout the tournament, as my putting was accurate and reliable!  On the first day, I was +1 through 13 holes, then I hit a drive out of bounds, resulting in a 7. However, I didn’t let the triple-bogey ruin my score, as I remained steady from the 15th-17th holes with all pars. On the second day, we had a shotgun, and I started on hole 5. I was even for my first seven holes; I had five bogeys and a birdie in the next seven holes.  In this tournament, I had two highlights: On the second day, I birdied the 14th hole, where I previously made a 7, and on the 3rd hole (my 17th hole), I made a 45 ft, downhill, and heavily right to left sloped putt for birdie!  My biggest challenge this week was staying mentally focused during the long, hot rounds. I played steady and close to par for the first nine holes on both days. I must improve my focus to make every shot count, especially going into my last high school season and preparing for collegiate golf!  I am proud of my vast improvement. Last year, I placed 44th with an 86-78. This year, I shaved off 11 strokes and finished 34 spots better! Overall, I am happy with how I played, and I need to stay focused throughout the round without getting bored so I don’t make as many bogeys!
  • Camp/Event
  • Junior Series Championship - Northern Ohio PGA
  • 7/05/23 to 7/06/23
  • 5th place finish (77,76 - 5,700, par 70, 118 slope, 72.3 rating, 44 participants). I could have shot much lower if I avoided three hazards. Over two days, I was in trouble on three holes, costing me seven shots. Because my tee shots were too long for the hole, I had to take or hit out of a penalty area. My takeaway from this lesson is to hit a shorter club off the tee when playing shorter distances. My 260+ drives do not benefit me when playing such short distances with tricky penalty areas. Going into next week’s 47th Ohio Junior Girls Championship, I will consciously think about hitting a lesser wood or hybrid off the tee to keep me in the fairway. Next week, I aim to play “boring” golf to give myself the best chance of a low score!
  • Camp/Event
  • Junior Series Tournament - Northern Ohio PGA
  • 6/30/23 to 6/30/23
  • Medalist (76 - 5,710 yards, 72.8 rating, 120 slope) Won by three strokes. My biggest challenge in today's tournament was my mental game; I knew I could score low, but I was paired with two girls who shot 97 and 101. It took a lot of work to stay focused on my game without getting bored. I put some pressure on myself to defend my Rawiga Tournament win from last year; I continue to be excited about challenging myself in tournament conditions and putting myself in contention to win tournaments!
  • Camp/Event
  • 123rd U.S. Women's Amateur Qualifier
  • 6/29/23 to 6/29/23
  • 48th place finish (82 - 6,456 yards, 77.4 rating, 136 slope, 72 participants); The field was primarily comprised of elite D1 golfers. I started my round with a birdie but could not keep it going. I had great drives and played well around the greens. My biggest challenge were my approach shots with longer irons and not being extremely precise. I am not adept at playing this distance in tournaments, but I will work on this as I intend to compete in more tournaments at this level. I am thrilled to have played in the qualifier and pushed myself to compete with some of the best golfers in the nation!
  • Camp/Event
  • Hudson Junior Invitational Tournament
  • 6/20/23 to 6/22/23
  • 10th place finish (85, 73, 77 - 5,700 yards 73.4 rating, 135 slope, 72 participants); My score of 73 on day two was the lowest in the field. My first day set me back due to some of my drives and poor putting; however, I persevered with my driver the rest of the week. On day two, I played well and steady on the front nine until the eighth and ninth holes, where my driver put me in trouble, resulting in a double bogey and a bogey. Despite two bad holes, I persevered and shot -2 on the back nine. On the third day, I maintained a score of +2 until the 17th and 18th holes, where my tee shots put me in high, heather grass. Overall, I am proud of how I fought back on the second two days and posted scores to achieve a top-ten finish in a competitive field.
  • Camp/Event
  • 74th U.S. Girls' Junior Qualifying
  • 5/25/23 to 5/25/23
  • 14th place finish (81 - 6,033 yards, 74.1 rating, 126 slope); My first USGA event.
  • Camp/Event
  • AJGA Marathon Petroleum Preview At Findlay
  • 4/29/23 to 4/30/23
  • 9th place finish (83, 75 - 5548 yards, 72.4 rating, 134 slope) and persevered through the difficult playing conditions of driving rain and strong winds. I did not play my best on the first day but returned on the second day and improved eight places to finish in the top ten. My biggest challenge on the first day was not being confident in my putts, and on the second day, I struggled to get my approach shots tight. Nevertheless, I am glad to have played in this tournament against some tough competition, and I am excited to play more golf in the upcoming weeks.
  • Camp/Event
  • 2023 Joe Haase Cup
  • 4/22/23 to 4/22/23
  • 3rd place finish, and scored 31 points over 18 holes under the Stableford Stroke Play format and helping lead the Northern Ohio PGA Junior Tour team to the runner-up finish. Despite the rain and hail, I finished 3rd overall. My best moment in this round was when I had an eagle on a 450 yd par 5. I hit my drive to about 250 yards and then hit a 4-hybrid to 5 feet on my second shot, and I made the putt.
