Eighth graders typically don’t have a strong sense of self or know what direction they want to take their lives. This was the exact situation I was in, and to make things even more complicated, I was learning how to play golf. No one in my family had ever played and my dad and I were figuring out the fundamentals together. The first time I ever played 18 holes was in a tournament and I had no idea what I was doing. Every shot compounded onto each other and I walked away with a 120. That wasn’t good enough. I knew that if I had any hopes of getting better, I would have to work incredibly hard to catch up. So I did. I kept pushing myself day after day to improve my score. Within a year, I was shooting in the 80s. Even with this continuous practice, I managed to maintain a 4.3 GPA and balance work, athletics, academics, and a social life. I plan to continue this balance by working ahead when possible and carving time out of my day to ensure I have quality practice time. Today, I have an 8.1 handicap and plan to make that an even lower number. In college, I hope to play for a hard-working team that will strive for excellence on and off the course.
