Personal Statement

My name is Malia Schroeder and I am a Senior at Lakewood High School. I started competing in golf at the age of 8 through the Washington Junior Golf Association, the PGA Junior League, Drive Chip and Putt and other local junior tournaments.

What my playing resume cannot express is my love for golf and my desire to play at the collegiate level.  I was challenged by tough losses and have had to learn to overcome obstacles with my game.  I have worked very hard to improve, spending extra time on the course, especially time around the greens and on my swing. What I love most about golf is the life lessons I've learned through playing the game including sportsmanship, respect, responsibility, and personal accountability.

Some highlights of my Junior golf experiences are 6 appearances at the WJGA state tournament placing 3rd in 2017 and a win at the WJGA Players Championship. I placed 2nd in 2017 and 2018 in the PNW Girls Junior PGA Championship.  My PGA Junior League team won the Washington State Championship in 2014.  I qualified for the National Drive Chip and Putt Championship in both 2016 and 2017 and had the opportunity to visit Augusta National Golf Course before the Masters.   Although my Sophomore High School  Golf season was cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic,  I enjoyed a great Freshman season.  I was awarded WIAA's Northwest Conference Co-MVP, experienced my first Hole in One during tournament play, was nominated as WIAA 2A player of the week and qualified for the WIAA State Tournament.

Outside of golf I have studied piano for 12 years, played on the High School Varsity Basketball team, participated in  AAU youth basketball, competed in competitive youth soccer, volunteered at the Arlington Food Bank, worked at Battlecreek Golf Course and currently work at Starbucks.  These experiences have taught me about teamwork, mentorship, civil responsibility and work ethic.  By playing a variety of sports I've learned that being coachable and open to change is crucial when trying to improve and be part of a team.

My current GPA is 3.87 and I am taking several college level courses including Calculus, Physics, AP English and US Honors History.  Being a student athlete has been a huge part of my life and I have worked hard on time management, prioritization and balance.  I would love to continue my golf career at the collegiate level and am willing to put the work and energy into achieving my goals.
