Personal Statement
Hello! My name is Madeline Abbott. I am 15 years old, and I am a freshman in high school this fall from Yankton, South Dakota. I am 5'9" and 155 pounds. I started playing hockey when I was 4 years old. Through the years I have worked very hard to excel both on the ice and in the classroom.
Since I started playing hockey, I played on the boys teams the first 7 years. I was on the A team throughout squirts and peewees. In 2020 I played on the 2008 South Dakota Selects AAA boys team. I was the only girl that made the team. In 2020 I was named Defensive Player of the Year for the boys PeeWee A team. Two years ago I played on the Yankton High School Girls Varsity team, where I was a starting defenseman and the leading scorer on the team. I was given the ironman award that year. I also played for the girls South Dakota 14u National Team, as a defenseman. We won the bronze medal at nationals. At last years tryouts, I was asked to move from the 14u to the 16u team. I was the only 2008 player in the state asked to move up. We again qualified for nationals and won the bronze medal. I was a starting defenseman. This past 2 seasons I have played for the Sioux Falls Lady Flyers girls varsity team to further my development. We had a great season. I was one of the top defenseman as an 8th grader, and was a starter as a freshman.
This year I made both the 16u and 19u teams for Team South Dakota. We qualified for nationals at both levels, which will start in a few weeks. I am very excited for this!
Next year I am moving to th Twin Cities to play hockey for Holy Family Catholic School in Victoria, MN. It is going to be a big change, and a lot of work, but I know I am ready to take the next step in my development as a student athlete.
I think my strengths as a hockey player are my skating ability, conditioning, and my hockey sense. I work hard in the gym, both during the season and in the off season. This year I am committed to improving my shot.
I am also a good student. I am a straight A student. I am currently in advanced math and honors English, the only two honors classes available to me. I am hoping to go into the medical field some day. Because of this, I am committed to working hard in school.
I am very excited to start learning about the college recruiting process. I look forward to all of my future communications with college coaches. Thank you for taking the time to look at my profile!
