Personal Statement
My name is Cece Curtin. I graduated Montpelier High School in Vermont in 2021 and I am currently attending Rice Prep 2021-2022 as a PG student.
Hockey started for me at age 7 when my dad built our first rink in our back yard, 3 doors down from a neighbor with a rink in her front yard, who grew up to be an Olympic Gold medalist. Watching her play made a lasting impression. Over the years, I played for CVSA Capitals and with the club Vermont Flames. Many teammates dropped off and by the Bantum years, I was the only girl playing for our club. My second Bantum year, I started as Right Wing. Five feet tall, but skating toe to toe with boys twice my size and weight. I had speed, determination and I was often underestimated, which worked to my advantage.
High School arrived and I decided to stay with my High School team. More friends parted for travel teams and prep schools. I wanted to stay with my local team to help develop the program and encourage more girls to play hockey at our rink. I started, Right Wing, freshman year. Sophomore year I was the second highest scoring player, second only to the highest scoring player in the State, my teammate and friend. I was awarded Team I All-Star 2020 and MVP of the team.
I was named Captain my Senior Year, 2021 . I was named a Vermont Rotary All-Star 2021 and awarded as a Vermont State Team 1 All-Star 2021. I was also named MVP. I ended my senior year with a total of 95 points in the four years: 40 assists and 55 goals.
I am a good student and maintained with a final High School GPA of 3.38. I was awarded Academic All-Star 2021. I played 3 sports: Ice Hockey, Field Hockey (Captain and Vermont All-State Team 1, and recipient of the Solons Award 2021; top team scorer and Offensive Player of the Year
2020 and Team 1
Vermont All-State 2020, and Lacrosse MVP 2019.
First semester of my senior year, I took 2 college courses to prepare for college course expectations and help determine a major: Intro to Business (earned an A) and Introduction to Early Education (earned an A). This past summer, I was asked to coach with the G4Hockey program at an all-girls development camp and continue to help out on available weekends. I've worked since I was 15, scooping ice cream and bussing tables.
Due to COVID limiting exposure camp attendance and college visits my Junior year, I decided to attend Rice Prep for a PG year 2021-2022. I'm glad for the strong skill development offered at Rice Prep, as well as the academic challenges and time management demands of playing on a heavy travel team while maintaining strong study skills. I'm excited for this extra year as time to make a more informed college choice and play one more year in a full, traditional season.
I believe I have what it takes to be a college student athlete. I look forward to meeting coaches who will recognize my strong commitment to the sport and to my eagerness to continue to develop as a player and teammate.
