Personal Statement

My name is Sarah Pearson. I am 5' 6" and 160 lbs. I attend Northwestern High School and play hockey for the Hayward Co-op varsity team. We consist of six teams from all over the Northland; Ashland, Rice Lake, Shell Lake, Spooner, Hayward and Northwestern. It's only about an hour drive everyday to practice for most of us.  I currently have a cumulative GPA of 3.8. I try to challenge myself in the classroom by taking the harder classes offered to my grade in order to get the most prepared for college. I would like to major in Athletic Training in college so that i can pursue a career as a team physician. When I was younger I would always waste all of the athletic tape and even sometimes my hockey tape trying to tape myself up. It never really worked though, because I was never actually injured. (Fun Fact: I've never broken a bone or been injured) *knock on wood* Though, I have broken my older brothers arm.

I started playing hockey in Kindergarten, I brought a flyer home from school and asked my parents if I needed to know how to skate in order to play this. They broke my heart and said yes but they took me to a learn to skate the next week. I learned quickly an joined the Iron River mini-mites. It was an outdoor facility so I spent most nights crying with my toes in warm water. After a few years at Iron River they shutdown so I went and played for the Superior Spartan boys team.  I was the only girl on the team. I learned a lot playing with the boys but when I got into high school it was time to start taking the long haul to Hayward everyday. My freshman year I started on the varsity hockey team and played on power play and penalty kill. I averaged .6 points per game in the regular season and .5 in the playoffs. After playoffs my team had the opportunity to play in the state championship game against the University School of Milwaukee Wildcats. We ended up losing the game 2-1, but got revenge the next season. My sophomore year I also started on varsity and played on power play and penalty kill. My coaches often have me matched up with the best players on the opposing team because of my ability to keep my head on a swivel and know what's going on in all areas of the ice.  My defensive zone coverage has always been very good. I would consider myself to be a play maker on the ice due to my ability of seeing the whole ice, I can see who's open and make passes most players can't. I average .8 points per game in the regular season and 1 point per game in playoffs. We went back to the state championship against the same team as last year, USM Wildcats. We beat them this time 4-1. I started this game and had the honor of playing in the last minute and a half of the game.  Next season we hope to go back, only losing 3 seniors we should be in good shape.

Outside of hockey I throw shot put and discus on our varsity track team. I made my school's top ten this year for discus.  After track and once summer starts I enjoy going camping with my family. We take two trips every summer. Our first one is an 8 day trip over the Fourth of July to Little Boy Lake in Longville, MN. Our second trip is a 14 day trip during the beginning of August and we take our camper out to Lake Vermilion. During this trip, my cousins and I always stay a couple of nights out on a random island on Lake Vermilion. We usually kayak to the islands. My family got a new dog in April of 2016, he's a yellow/red fox lab, I named him Otis. I like to run around with him outside, when he's not trying to eat my hair. I also enjoy watching The Voice or American Ninja Warrior with my family. My older brother graduation in 2014 and went into the Air National Guard. I have a little brother who was born in 2007.

Some things I would say are my good traits are communication, I can communicate well with others and figure out problems. I am coachable, I can learn quickly and don't have much of an attitude. I am respectful, I treat everyone just as I would want to be treated. I am hard working, I will never give up on something even if it's not going the way I want it to.  One thing I could get better at is getting outside of my comfort zone and doing things I wouldn't normally do. I try to get better at all of these things whether I feel i'm good at it or not. Everything could always improve.

Thank You for your time and consideration! I hope I get the opportunity to be the next player on your roster.

-Sarah Pearson
