Personal Statement
My name is Maria Figucia. I am currently going into my sophomore year at Aquinas Academy. I have been playing lacrosse since I was in fifth grade. In my last year of middle school I was named captain of both my field hockey and lacrosse teams. That year, I was also awarded for sportsmanship in lacrosse, basketball, and indoor field hockey. This gave me great experience as a leader and team player on my teams. This encouraged me to volunteer and help coach my school's youth sports. The summer before my freshman year I joined my club/travel team PPLC. After my first travel season I knew that I wanted to continue playing lacrosse after high school. As a freshman I quickly adapted to a new group of girls and a different playing style. The transition from middle school to travel to a AA high school team was confusing at times, but after taking in all my training from various coaches I was able to become a very diverse player. Due to a short bench and injuries, I was able to play any and every position my team needed from taking the draw to playing goalie. After multiple position switches I was able to rack up 23 goals and 10 assists in my freshman season. We were able to make it to playoffs, which no one expected from a small, predominantly freshman school team. I hope to make playoffs in for the next three years as well, and take a more leading role on the team as we lose our seniors. On the academic side I took the most rigorous courses my school, the #1 Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, offers for freshmen. I was placed on the summa cum laude honor roll for three quarters and magna cum laude for the other quarter. As a straight A student I have maintained a 4.0(unweighted) and 4.4(weighted) GPA. I participate in various school committees and clubs, including being the co-head of the Students of Service 2019-2020 club. I am currently a Medallion Ball Participant working 50 service hours each year of high school. I also participate on my school field hockey team as a starting midfielder, and an indoor field hockey club team. My experience of playing multiple sports from a young age has given me great time management skills, and adaptability to any situation. This makes me able to find my place on any team or in any environment, and take on a leading role within it.
