Personal Statement
Hi, I’m Evelyn. I learned to cox in the summer of 2019 with the New Trier Masters on the North Branch of the Chicago River. Since then I’ve been coxing for my high school team - New Trier High School. I love rowing! I love so many elements of the sport, being outside, working together as a team, getting to know everyone’s personalities and styles and helping us all to do better each day. I have learned how to row on days when we are shorthanded, so I am aware of the hard work my teammates are doing every time they are in the boat. I enjoy the challenge of planning race day - putting together a schedule, digging deep into the other teams to develop a race strategy, and executing at the regatta. I love getting down to business at regattas and being ready for all of the surprises that pop up.
In my free time I like to sew my own clothes and I have been downhill skiing since I was 5. My family spends time in the mountains whenever we can, I love being outdoors and visualizing the lines for my ski runs the same way I visualize the line my boat will travel. I have many academic interests, I enjoy math, science and business as well as the arts. Before high school I spent a lot of time doing musical theatre. One of my skills is bringing people together. I know my rowers and make sure we are all on the same page to make the boat faster, and I do the same outside of rowing as a children's theater student director, Bridge Builder for the high school, and as a member of the Community House Junior Board in our town.
I hope to continue coxing in college, I look forward to the excitement of high level racing and the camaraderie of a great team of motivated athletes!
