My name is Kaitlin Urbanik and I am a senior at Shrewsbury High School in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. Due to our high school being only a short two minute drive from Lake Quinsigamond, we are fortunate to be one of the few public schools in Massachusetts that has rowing. Our team is apart of the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association (NEIRA) which means that many of the schools we face are prep schools and private schools. However, our team is on the rise and we consistently have been able to hold our own and prove ourselves to be a competitor on our home lake.
Throughout my rowing career, I have had a wide range of experiences and training. During the fall and spring, I row for my high school team, Shrewsbury High School Crew. However, during the summer of 2018, I rowed for CRI’s Competitive Youth Summer Program and during the summer of 2019, I rowed for the Northeast region of the US Rowing Olympic Development Program. With CRI, I was able to make the Grand Finals at Club Nationals in the U17 8+ and with ODP, I was able to win silver in the U18 8+.
From these experiences, I was able to take what I learned and bring them back to my team at home. At the end of my junior year, I was elected captain by my coaches and my teammates. As a captain at my high school, we are required to run practices in the offseason. I took a lot of the things I learned at both CRI and ODP and have incorporated them into our practices. When I first became captain, I contacted our athletic director to ask if we could bring up the ergs from our boathouse to the high school and be able to use the weight room to which he agreed. I was able to make the workouts a lot more challenging, the hours longer, and added more days to our schedule. The girls on our team really stepped up to the challenge and everyone is in the best shape they have ever been in going into the upcoming season. I am super excited to see what our team can accomplish this year.
I tell you this extensive history of my rowing and my crew team to show you that I am a leader and I will strive to make an impact on any team that I am on. I am looking for a college that has a competitive crew team where everyone is pushing each other to their limits and has a growth mindset. I am also looking for a team with strong team dynamics and a sense of community.
I not only strive to make a difference on my crew team but also in my school and community. I am currently Secretary of my class of over 500 students, Vice President of the National Latin Honors Society, and am a member of the National Honors Society. In addition, I am also a peer tutor, work as an intern during my free periods at school, and frequently volunteer at a local preschool. I take pride in being a student athlete and I am hoping to find the perfect fit for my collegiate experience.
