Hi! My name is Nadine Ebersold and I am a Junior at Fairport High School. I grew up in the Village of Fairport and within walking distance of the Fairport Crew Club boathouse. I played softball and did both dancing and gymnastics when I was younger, but once I started rowing as a 7th grader in 2019, I instantly fell in love with the sport and haven't looked back. Rowing is different because it challenges me not only physically but mentally. While other sports have a team mentality, rowing is on a completely different level where everyone in the boat needs to work together as one to achieve the goal. That to me is why I enjoy the sport so much and why I want to continue my rowing journey in college.
During my first two years with the Club, I started out on Starboard side in bow and then in 3 seat. The next 3 seasons, I moved to 7 seat. In the Spring of 2023, I moved to Port side and into the stroke seat. I was team captain in my second season on the novice team and have been named team captain for the Spring 2024 varsity team. My coaches have consistently commented on my technique as a model for others in the boat. Given my height, some may think I would be more fit to be in the coxswain seat. However, my coaches kept me in the boat because, as they say, I am the powerhouse of the boat who is amenable to their feedback. I have a very polite and upbeat personality but I can also take control of any situation when I feel it is appropriate and necessary.
Our club competes in regattas across Western and Central New York primarily in Rochester, but also in Buffalo, Syracuse and Saratoga. I rowed in the Head of the Charles in the bow seat of an 8 boat in 2021 and in the stroke seat of a 4 boat in 2023. While our teams did not place in the top half of the boats in our heats, rowing at the HOCR was the highlight of both seasons and my rowing career so far. It was eye opening to witness the magnitude of the event and how competitive yet supportive each individual and team were to each other.
I am extremely dedicated to improving my form and technique, developing a strong team bond to benefit boat dynamics and working on my mental and physical strength. Even as a novice, I was one of the very few girl teammates who attended off-season weight training. I also currently belong to a gym in off-season and enjoy keeping up with my workouts. I believe I will be a great addition to my college rowing team because I am a strong leader who can bring the team together and am able to accept coaching feedback. My coaches and teammates both look to me for feedback regarding the boat and areas for improvement. I take pride in everything I do whether it is my academics, my rowing technique or my personal life. I know my dedication and work ethic will benefit me and my team and look forward to my next step in the sport at the college level.
