Hi! My name is Maddie Bohan, and I'm a 16-year-old junior at The Ursuline School, located in New Rochelle, New York. I am a coxswain for Row America Rye, located in Rye, New York. I initially began rowing at the end of my freshman year for Pelham Community Rowing Association and my entire sophomore year. I have always had a love for being on the water and it was inevitable that I found the sport. Although I had such a passion for rowing, I had a conversation with my coaches about making the change to become a coxswain at the end of my first year of rowing. Unfortunately, my previous team did not need another coxswain as there were not enough girls on our team to create another eight. At the end of the 2022 fall season, I was granted the opportunity to cox the masters' men’s 4+ at the Head of the Riverfront Regatta and my boat and I managed to take third at my first race. From then on I knew that being a coxswain was the perfect position for me. With the guidance of my previous coaches, we decided it would be the smartest decision for me to move teams so I could be successful as a coxswain. I am currently coxing for women at Row America Rye, but as I do weigh more than the average coxswain for women, I think being on a collegiate men’s team would be most beneficial. I have quickly adapted to the new role of becoming a coxswain, learning from my coaches and peers, to become a strong, productive leader and reliable teammate. As a coxswain I have been able to learn more about each rower, and how they individually work, finding the sweet spots on how to make our boats fast and fluid. I am quite eager to continue coxing competitively past high school, and excited to start my college rowing journey.
