Quad Practice-Bow...My name is Madelyn Markey and I am a potential 2022 crew recruit from Gwynedd Mercy High School, Gwynedd Valley, PA. I am 5’ 9” and weigh 135 lbs. I am a committed, hardworking, persistent student athlete who is willing to put in the time and work necessary to succeed and exceed in all my set goals. Having an extremely demanding schedule is how I thrive as an individual and as a student athlete. I know that in life without hard work, dedication, and determination, success will not be attainable.
I began swimming at the age of six and swam competitively as a U.S. swimmer starting at the age of eight until the age of sixteen. As a freshman at Gwynedd, the new rowing program greatly intrigued me, so I began rowing in the fall of 2018. I was privileged to be coached by Mark Valenti in my freshman year. In the spring of 2019, I rowed in a four of juniors that qualified for Nationals in Zanesville, OH and placed 10th overall in the nation. I knew then that rowing was my new next passion! I have been exposed to many coaching styles, so I am able to take all criticism and apply the necessary corrections. What make me different than most is that I try to continually reinforce the corrections so I can improve my technique. I am willing to do the extra work necessary for my personal and my team’s growth. My goal is to attend a college that continues to challenge me both academically and athletically.
I take my studies just as seriously and work very hard to maintain a 3.7 GPA. I am also active in my church’s youth program B.O.L.D. Volunteering for community service activities is important because I enjoy knowing I have helped someone who is less fortunate. I aspire to continue my positive personal growth and to find the right college at the highest level possible. I have four years to “knock it out of the park”. If I do not set my goals high then I cannot say I’ve tried my very best.
