Personal Statement
I began rowing in November of 2017, half-way through my junior year. I absolutely fell in love with how team-oriented the sport was, even during the indoor season. For the entirety of my career as an athlete, I had been a part of sports that focused more on individual success, like swimming and track. Rowing completely obliterated the idea that I had to be better than my teammates in order to have success and introduced the concept of working together with a team of people to win. I loved the unifying effect this had on the team, which was a very new thing for me, as I had always considered my teammates to be my biggest competitors when I swam and ran. While there most definitely is still competition within my team, it's a lot more friendly and I find that it tends to be much more of a positive than a negative.
Rowing has been such a positive for me, as it has helped me get through a recent rough patch in my life. I love the physical and mental challenge it presents, and it has provided such a fantastic outlet for me as a high energy person. I'm most productive in academics and athletics when I have a busy schedule, and rowing has given my life a lot of the structure I need to be successful. I've most certainly grown as a person since I've started rowing, and I would love continue growing through this sport during college. I would love to be a part of your team!
