Personal Statement
What influences me and shapes me into whom I am, is definitely my past diagnosis of anxiety and Tourette’s syndrome. I realized that these issues were derived from internalizing stress and not knowing how to release and express the energy and thoughts that often left me paralyzed and feeling alone. During the summer of my incoming 9th grade year, my family and I were in search of a sport or activity that I would enjoy and would assist me in managing my stress. My mother walked in and said the words “I found a sport where you can sit and be active at the same time”. That moment, we laughed and signed me up for novice crew camp. I was hooked after the first practice and day on the water. I couldn’t stop talking about it.
So far, through the sport, I have noticed many new characteristics about myself. I really do have a competitive side and I work better in a team environment. I am very observant of all the important details, the people, and often take mental notes of what is going on in the present time around me. Through crew I have realized that I have many opportunities to potentially use this sport in my college years. The desire to participate on a college crew team has pushed me to change my approach to school. I know I couldn’t preform in crew if I don’t maintain my good grades and civic community volunteering. I look forward to seeing what my future in crew will bring me.
