Personal Statement

Hello my name is Claire Stephens and I am in the graduating class of 2023 at Highland High school located in Gilbert, Arizona. Even though Arizona is my home now, I grew up in Utah until I was 11 years old. I started playing soccer when I was 5 years old and was more interested with the nature on the field rather than playing the game. One particular game my parents were fed up with watching me chase butterflies on the field and they had a motivational speech with me at halftime. After getting a “talking to” I went onto the field with drive and passion. From that moment on the feeling never changed. After my parents watched me tear up the field in awe the rest of that season, they found a more competitive team for me. The funny thing is, I didn’t know I was on a competition team for two whole years. I was just happy doing what I loved.  As I was doing both competitive dance and competitive soccer at the time, I decided it was too much and I would have to make a choice between the two. With my love for the game, I retired my scratchy and uncomfortable dance costumes to put on my jersey and cleats full time. I am grateful to have dance in my past because I am certain it has helped with footwork for soccer. Playing for Utah Avalanche at the most competitive level exposed me to some of the top players at a young age. I then moved to Arizona and played for Arizona Arsenal. As I grew older, I continued to play for Arsenal at the ECNL level for several years. Recently I was invited to play for the Utah Royals FC Arizona Girls Academy team and decided to make the move and continue to develop my soccer skills. I have loved the experiences I learned from each coach and teammate thus far and feel they have all played a role in my success.

Although soccer is a major part of my life, academics is just as important to me. I have been able to balance both school and soccer with a weighted gpa of 4.3. College is something I look forward to and I am deciding between a career in health sciences or elementary education. I may be leaning toward elementary education because as my elementary teachers encouraged me to reach my potential and shoot for the stars, I too would love to help children know they can achieve anything they put their mind to.

Spending time with friends and family, and also giving back to the community are things I enjoy outside of soccer. I have earned a young women medallion which is equivalent to an eagle scout. Some of the things I have done to help my community is serve food to the homeless, make food and hygiene packets for women and children shelters, pack food at Feed My Starving Children, and visit nursing homes to sing carols for the elderly.

Through soccer I have learned obedience, discipline, perseverance, hard work, and how to work well with teammates. With these characteristics I have been honored to earn the Overachiever Award on Arizona Arsenal, the MVP award on my high school soccer team, and Golden Scholar each year in school. If given the opportunity to play the sport I love in college, I would bring these qualities and traits with me to my new team. I would be an example on and off the field, hold high moral standards and of course do my part to help my team to victory.

Thank you for getting to know me a little better,

Claire Stephens
