Personal Statement

My name is Kylie Silcox, and I LOVE SOCCER!

I am the oldest of 4 children (2 sisters and a brother) and both of my parents just retired from the military. After living in California for 4 years, we just transferred to Florid where my parents are setting. I just started with my new club and am now a senior at Cocoa Beach High School in Cocoa Beach, FL.

My dad has played soccer his whole life, including college, and as his first born was quick to put a ball in front of me! I started playing and ENJOYING the game as a little girl and have not looked back since!

Other than the actual competition on the field, I love soccer because of the bond and family support my teammates provide. This has been a crucial piece of my life, as a kind of sanctuary from the social stress that comes with moving every few years as a military kid, especially since my school classmates are older (I skipped 2nd grade). My closest friends off the field have always been my teammates because together we’ve battled, shared the joy of victory and misery of defeat, and ground through the blood, sweat, and tears of training!

I also think my off-field experiences have benefited me on the field. As the oldest of four children, with parents who often deploy or work crazy hours when not deployed, I often assume the role of a 3rd parent. Learning how to take care of my siblings has given me a comfort with leadership and motivation; inspiring 3-year-old and 5-year-old girls, and a 10-year-old boy, to stay on task and orderly is not easy! Similarly, constantly moving with no choice but to quickly socially integrated into new environments has developed my flexibility to accommodate whatever the situation demands for building cohesion, whether it requires me to be a follower or a leader.

Of course, I also love soccer because it is the best game on earth! The smell of the grass, the feel of the ball, the butterflies just before kickoff, the celebrating (or crying) with my sisters, the roar of the crowds, are absolutely addicting! Since I just cannot imagine life without soccer, it would be a dream come true and answer to my prayers if I am able to play in college!

I have developed a passion for nursing, and hope to play at a school where I can start pursuing a nursing degree. I also hope to attend school back in California, where my closest friends are. I look forward to being of service to a program that takes a chance on me!
