Personal Statement
Growing up, I never saw a match on the television that had women players. As a small child, I assumed that soccer was only played by men. This was particularly true in Mexico where both of my parents came from, but I soon realized that in my Mexican/American/Californian family everyone has at least one daughter or son who plays soccer. We are different, and I am the product of that difference. I combine the loyalty, hard-work and dedication of the Mexican family culture with the confident stride and pride of being American, along with the openness of the Californian culture that enables me to respond to new ideas on and off the field. Individually, I, Carolina Gonzalez, am always ready to improve my game and I listen to my coaches, very well. I learn from observing other players, and from trial and error. I won two golden shoes from at the ID camp for the University of California, Berkeley. These shoes are awarded to the most talented player within the age group. I am able to play with both my right and left foot. My club has taught me about teamwork and playing together. I am a possession based player and work hard to recover the ball when it is lost. As a first generation Mexican American woman, going to college is a big deal for my family, and I want to make the most of this opportunity to be a true scholar-athlete. Academically, I love studying history and biology. I handle my academics and my athletics by balancing my time. Being a student athlete, I am always a student first. On the field, I bring the beauty of playing this sport back into the game. This beauty is something that everyone should enjoy.
