Personal Statement
In playing soccer, both for my school team and club team, I think I've greatly developed as a player, as well as a student. As a player, I believe the part of my soccer career that has helped me be the best player I can be is playing against one of our rivals this past varsity season. Being my first year on varsity, and being a starter, I was nervous to play the team. As soon as I stepped out onto the field, though, all my fear went away and I was ready to play like my normal self. The game was not perfect, but I was able to hold off players who were 1-2 years older than me, and have already committed to D1 schools, from scoring. The game ended in a 0-0 tie, which was great for the defense as we were able to hold off one of the best girls’ soccer programs in the state.
Soccer is a sport that requires a variety of skills in order to be the best player that you can be. As a player, I use my speed and field awareness to both stop the other team defensively, and start the offensive push for my team. I not only mark my player tight, but have the ability to back up my teammates when they get beat. I also have the determination and ability to go up against players who are bigger and/or taller than me. Both of these can be seen in my highlight video.
Academically, being a part of the high school team had made me a better student. I have taken many honors and AP classes this year, which I knew would be hard for me to do with being a varsity starter. I had to time manage my school work with practices and games. Throughout the season, and even in the off season now, my grades were better than what many may have expected for such a tough work load and a rigorous soccer schedule. When playing club, I have more down time as I do not have soccer practice right after school every day, which helped me manage my time better for school.
