My name is Marlene Banales, I will be graduating in June 2022 from Waukegan High School. I play club for HOTC Elite in Waukegan, IL. As a freshman in High School I was offered a starting position on the varsity team and received an award for being the most improved player. My primary position is defensive right back, and I occasionally play as right/ midfielder. Throughout the years I have learned how to balance my time, in order to ensure success on and off the field . I have consistently been on the high honor roll since middle school. Currently, my unweighted GPA is a 3.8, however since I am enrolled in honors courses my weighted GPA is a 4.4.
I am very motivated and always try my best to make sure others are too. As a person who forms strong relationships easily, I would strive to promote team cohesion. I am very productive in class and tend to learn things quickly. I am very ambitious and care about my grades, my positive personality helps me keep a can-do attitude in my studies. I am a 3 year member of TRIO Educational Talent Search which helps us look for colleges, help us get a good score on the SAT, and how to deal with college debt. I have also been playing the saxophone in my school band for 5 years. During the summer, I work at children’s Academy as a teacher’s assistant. I enjoy spending time with all the children that attend but it has also taught me to be more patient. Another job that I have during the summer is as a soccer referee and coach, which has also taught me a lot of patience.
The first time I joined an extracurricular activity was when I was 9 years old. I practiced martial arts and self- defense for 3 years. I have been involved in many sports such as track, volleyball, and basketball. Eventually my parents gave me the opportunity to try something new. I joined a soccer team, and from that moment on I fell in love with the sport. I have been playing for 5 years so far and continue to play. I started playing in a recreational league in Waukegan, IL for three years. When I heard about HOTC Elite I decided to try out for club soccer and I have played with them for about 2 years now.
Soccer has made a huge impact in my life, it has changed my perspective in life and has changed my role as a student-athlete. I look forward to playing with a hardworking team of girls that look up to each other when times are tough. I know my soccer career and I can’t wait to see how much more I can grow.
