Personal Statement
en I entered A-levels and began to study psychology, I always believed that I would work with people in the future. As time went on, I have narrowed this down to working with kids. I was eager to learn how they develop mentally, socially and emotionally and how the role of the
environment plays in their development. Doing some light research, I found that Psychology
best suited this passion. My interest in children began with my work as an assistant swim coach. I found it very
captivating to observe how the experiences of the younger years has a great influence on the
adult you become. I wanted to learn how children view the world, why they are so naïve yet so
intelligent, how they show a sense a personality from so young and how their brains work when
processing this ever-changing world around them. I have also been a member of the Girls
Brigade from the age of 5, and have spent a lot of time with girls my age and younger. Now I
am a teacher assistant for the youngest year group. Through this, I am gaining a lot of great
experience in teaching and managing a class of young girls. Moreover, I began to gain experience in working with children, mainly from the age of 3 and
sometimes younger, as I worked as a assistant coach a couple hours a week. It felt natural,
nothing like a regular job, it just felt as though it was time taken out to teach some amazing
kids how to swim and get over the fear of the water. From this, I realized I wanted to help them in other areas too. In addition to helping them overcome fear, I also wanted to learn
more about why they feared water in the first instance, and how they learn this behavior and
develop it. Then, I realized I wanted to learn about helping children out of such fears, and
which often lead into depression, abuse, and anxiety issues caused by many factors in their
everyday life. Coming from a small island in the Caribbean, I was very fortunate to grow up in a place that
is very diverse. Statistics show that there are 113 different nationalities within my country
today. This has given me the opportunity to get to know people from many different backgrounds
and cultures. Also, it has helped me to understand and respect differences within people, and
how to live and interact with cultures other than my own. Therefore, such an experience has
helped to mold me into a well-rounded and adaptable person, in and out of the classroom. Also,
I am interested in joining your university soccer team as I enjoy working with people, and
team sports, wanting to further develop my skill into a sport I returned to and always enjoyed over the years. Additionally, I am considered to be a strong work-ethic student. This was evident through an
experience of financial struggle that I experienced last year. After taking my AS exams, I
failed to achieve the required grades to retain my scholarship and continue onto year 13. I ended up repeating year 12, yet I am so grateful for such an experience. Ever since, I have
matured a lot as a student and person. I focused more on what my aspirations were, such as
attaining good grades and reaching university to study Psychology. I have also learned to
overcome disappointment through such an experience, and that every disappointment that looks
big, is just a 'little bump in the road'. Lastly, learning from this experience will help me
as student to overcome upcoming challenges I may face at university and upcoming challenges on a university team.
