My name is Alexandra Lopez, but people call me Allie. I am from Maryland, however, I live overseas in Abu Dhabi, UAE. I am 16 years old and a junior at the American Community School of Abu Dhabi. For the past four years I have been a three season athlete, playing on both JV and varsity teams. As an eighth grader, I was a starter on my JV soccer team and won the MVP award that year. Most recently, I played my third season as a starter on my school's varsity team; we won gold in our regional championship finally taking the trophy back from our biggest rivals. For the past two years I have also been a member of the JV and Varsity swimming and track and field teams. I was the schools' co-Female Rookie of the Year in grade 8 and in grade 9 I was named JV Female Athlete of the Year.
I have been on academic high honor roll for the past 4 years with a current GPA of 3.93. With regard to academic awards I listed several elsewhere in my profile. I am involved in couple service clubs at our school. I am co-President of a club called, Circle of Life. This club raises money and helps widen the circle of bone marrow donors in the UAE and Middle East. I also help out as a coach and referee for elementary school sports, like basketball and soccer. Finally, I work as an instructor for our elementary school learn-to-swim group two times a week.
How and Why? It always comes back to these two questions:
How do you play the game?
Why do you play the game?
The How has two parts to it: the physical and the mental. I have played a variety of positions on the soccer field, which include center defensive midfielder, center attacking midfielder and striker. Over the years, as my coaches needed, I have adjusted to other positions like sweeper, stopper, and left and right wing positions. This year I played center midfield almost exclusively. I am an aggressive player with a powerful shot. I am constantly working to improve my foot skills, non-dominate foot and long passes. I understand how crucial fitness is to playing a strong game as once you’re tired, everything goes downhill. Knowing this I use the other sports that I play to prepare me for soccer season so that I am in the best shape to play a full match start to finish. I also play a smart mental game. When on the field I always keep a positive spirit and try to boost team moral when we are down during a game. Coaches have always told me that they can consistently hear me on the field. I am able to use my experience with the sport to help boost spirits on the field, and to calmly communicate with teammates on the field. I am one of the biggest communicators on my varsity team.
Why I play the game is related to my past. I have always been in love with soccer, since I started playing at age four. Wherever my family has lived, I have found a way to involve soccer in my life; it has been a constant companion whether I played with girls, boys or both. Family has also played a role in my love for soccer, it is a way I connect with my parents and especially my grandpa who shares my passion for the sport.
