Personal Statement
Hello, my name is Maria Selman. I am an offensive midfielder with five years of Varsity soccer experience. Soccer has been part of my life since I was a kid. I started to play soccer when I was six years old. My parents encouraged me to play any sport of interest. As a kid, I tried golf, tennis, soccer, swimming, volleyball, and dance. However, I always knew that soccer was my passion. I credit soccer for my sense of discipline and commitment. Soccer also taught me that in order to accomplish my goals, I must give in time, consistency, and mainly hard work. I started playing soccer with the Elementary school team. Afterward, I decided to step up my game and join the Barca Academy, where I had to assume a role of a committed player and take full responsibility on this club team. Making the Varsity school team before freshman year became one of my goals. I played with Barca Academy for four years until 7th grade, where I was called up to try-out for the Varsity Team in my school. Throughout the five years I’ve formed part of the Varsity team, I learned the importance of friendship and confidence on the field. Being a 7th grade, 12-year-old, playing with high school girls was never a challenge for me. I was a starter in 7th grade and worked my way to keep my position. In my career as part of the Varsity team, I’ve been awarded MVP, All-Star, and Athlete of the Year.
I met and made relations with people of all ages. My confidence was a significant factor throughout this experience. Communication is vital in any team sport, and I have the courage to call out on my older and younger teammates. Throughout my soccer experience, I have played with different teams, such as an outside club called Sharp Dimitri in City FC. I have also trained with divisions U-20 and U-23, where I met people from different cultures and diverse opportunities from distinct provinces around the country.
As a soccer athlete, I am searching for a program that is well suited to me, academically, and athletically. I believe I have the skills and character to play at the college level. Having this said, I will assure you that I will have a positive impact on your team.
