Personal Statement
I am a 5’9 goalkeeper from Exeter, New Hampshire. My name is Samantha Montagno, but I go by Sam. I’ve been playing soccer since I was three, and I started club soccer at age 11.
It’s always been a goal of mine to play soccer in college. I work hard every day to become the best soccer player I can be and the best student I can be to hopefully one day achieve that goal. My greatest technical and tactical strengths are my ability to read and handle breakaways, my handling and diving technique, my quick decision making and my communication. I'm also coachable and always working to improve my game.
I’m currently a junior (2019 graduate) at Berwick Academy. I’ve been the starting goalkeeper on my Berwick’s varsity soccer team since 8th grade. Playing up as an 8th grader was a great experience that pushed me to be a better player so I could compete against girls five years older than me. I currently play club soccer for FC Stars of Massachusetts on the Central NPL team as well as the U.S. Soccer Development Academy team. I have weekly goalkeeper training as well as team training with my club.
I want to go to a college where I get high level training and game play that’s going to push me to be the best that I can be. I also want to be at a school where I'm going to be challenged academically so I'm the best student that I can be as well. At this point, I’m interested in majoring in psychology and possibly doing a dual major in criminology, criminal justice, or forensic science.
