Personal Statement
My name is Annabel Ashe, and I am a senior at The Bromfield School in Harvard, Massachusetts, where I am the starting goalkeeper on the varsity soccer team and a co-captain. I have been a varsity soccer player since the eighth grade and the starting goalkeeper for the past four seasons. In my sophomore and senior seasons, I was chosen as a League All-Star (no selections junior year due to a shortened season).
- 2021: Team record was 14-4-2. I played 17 games, with 15 goals against and 9 shutouts.
- 2020: Team record was 5-3-1. Our season was limited and did not include playoffs.
- 2019: Team record was 15-2-3. I played 18 games, with 19 goals and 10 shutouts.
- 2018: Team record was 12-4-2. I split the starting position with the senior GK. I played 9 games with 9 goals against and 5 shutouts.
I am 5'11" and about 150 lbs and very confident in my role as a goalkeeper. My greatest strengths on the field are effectively controlling the defensive line and being aggressive coming out and protecting the goal. I am not afraid of contact, and I pride myself on being a direct and clear communicator with my teammates. I've got a big voice and long arms, which makes me a formidable presence in the net. I take my role as captain very seriously and have always made it a priority to help younger, more inexperienced players develop and thrive. It is my responsibility to be a good role model on and off the field, so I do my best to exhibit a strong work ethic (first one there, last one to leave), positive attitude, regular communication, and loyalty. I work very well with my coach, as well as with our school's Athletic Director and Principal in support of my team.
I understand what it feels like to lose a position due to injury and the strength and resilience it takes to continue to support your teammates even while struggling with personal setbacks. I also understand the importance of putting your team and teammates first. During the beginning of my senior year, a series of events threatened to break our team apart. I learned what it means to dig deep as a leader in order to put personal rifts aside, repair relationships, and re-build morale. And it paid off -- against all odds, our team made it to the state playoffs in a "building year."
As well as playing on the varsity soccer team, I also play on the varsity basketball and lacrosse teams, which makes me a well-rounded athlete. I believe playing these other sports makes me a better soccer player.
