Personal Statement

Hello. My name is Isabella Stevens-Mercado, I'm currently 14 years old and a freshman. I'm the goalie for the Michigan Hawks 05 Black ECNL girls soccer team. And currently attend Community High School, taking sports at Pioneer High School. I'm an "A" student, that is very athletic. I additionally enjoy playing basketball, softball, flag football, skateboarding, and I can play many other sports such as volleyball, tennis, and hockey. Although I enjoy many other sports, I prioritize soccer overall. I attend every practice, games, and additional goalie training.  I truly love being a goalie, everything about it is fun to me. I could talk about how the physical aspect of being a goalie is so much fun and I love it, but that's boring! I like to focus on the mental aspect. While although being a goalie is a very physical position, many people don't realize its even more a mental position! Yeah, it's high anxiety at times, and a very stressful position, but that feeling of making a forward angry or frustrated because I keep saving their shots is what I thrive for.  When they score, It fires me up and gives me even more of a challenge. While recovering from a goal, I think of what happened, how to fix it/stop it next time, and tell myself she will not get past me again. Which shows I love a challenge, "why?" you may still be asking, because that feeling when I overcome a challenge is the best feeling, it also leaves me with an empty feeling that thrives for another obstacle/challenge, and that's the best part of sports/ of anything. Anyway, Thank you for taking the time to read me blabber on about why I love being a goalie! If you have any questions please contact me! I hope you have a good rest of your day! Bye!

Awards, Achievements and Activities

  • Award
    • Last year I ended Middle school as a 3 year honor roll student with all A's and B's Last year I had a 100% all year in US History! I got into Creative writing (a junior and sophomore class)
  • Activity
    • Over the summer I did volunteer work as a Junior Couch (JC) at Wide World Sports Center at the kids camp. The camp was a sports camp
  • Activity
    • where we would play all these fun games and get exercise. But some parents would just sign there kid up so someone could babysit. Who was that "babysitter"? me! I got the pleasure to work with young kids ranging from 2-9 sometimes even 10-13. I basically just played babysitter for 8/9 hours every day of the week! Kids are not easy! I would give them piggyback rides all day
  • Activity
    • take them to the bathroom
  • Activity
    • help wash their hands. They were always taking my shoes for some reason? They loved to watch me run. Anyway
  • Activity
    • I'd play tag
  • Activity
    • teach kids how to kick a soccer ball
  • Activity
    • throw a football
  • Activity
    • etc... Most of the time I had 2 kids sitting wrapped around my legs
  • Activity
    • hold 2 kids with each arm and have a kid on my shoulders. I felt like superwoman! It was the highlight of my summer until... THE PAIN! I felt 40 years older and it was only the 3rd day! it was wearing me down
  • Activity
    • but I persisted throughout the whole summer! Helped kids with math
  • Activity
    • taught others how to play sports. I was even a therapist figure at two points! One of the times the girl was sad that her mom was having another child and she felt I wasn't giving her much attention (I tried my best to even out the attention throughout all 8 or even 10 of them). The second time a boy was upset his mom was sending him to therapy because of his bad anxiety and all this over stuff. It took me 2 hours but I got through to him and by the end
  • Activity
    • he had a smile on his face! It was so precious! (Sorry for blabbering on about my volunteer work
  • Activity
    • I just miss it... crazy enough) 2011-2015: I took martial Arts at quest
  • Activity
    • and I was an assistant coach at the age of 9 and 10 around 3rd and 4th grade! I helped teach the younger kids. I also was the first kid to be in the Black Belt program and the Masters Program. On Saturdays

  • Activity
    • go through my training
  • Activity
    • help coach the younger kids
  • Activity
    • go to the Black Belt Program training and finally the Masters Program training against all adults! You don't know what awkward is until you have to spar against your music teacher and basically lightly beat them up and sit on their stomach area. THAT'S AWKWARD! I was the top of my class sometimes even with all adults! I had to quit though because of soccer
  • Activity
    • but I'm very thankful for karate because without it I would end up hurting myself from falling
  • Activity
    • and I wouldn't be able to get tripped and roll right out of it
  • Activity
    • popping right back up! (surprisingly I've used that trick in games very often this year) Lastly
  • Activity
    • this summer I will be a LIT at camp Algonquin for 2 weeks

    • ownership
  • Activity
    • and more. Last year as a normal camper I got the slalom award in water skiing
  • Activity
    • and it was only my 2nd try! I only tried it because of a dare. The award can only be completed if you stand up (on 1 ski) and go in and out of the wake on each side 2 times. It wasn't so different from scootering so I believe that's how I was able to get it so fast. My first year I received the sailing award
