Personal Statement
My name is Angelina Henry, I am 5’3”, about 115 lbs and I play on the Varsity soccer team for Swansboro High as well as Onslow County Soccer Association (OCSA Crew). As a child I was really shy and my mom homeschooled me up until 2nd grade. She always pushed me to join clubs or try a sport to help me make friends and get over my shyness. My father is in the Marine Corps so we move to different stations every 3 years. I became interested in soccer around 7 years ago when I first moved to North Carolina due to my father’s change in station. I previously had tried gymnastics and cheerleading, but I didn't like them enough to pursue them. Majority of my friends in North Carolina played soccer, and since I was looking for a new sport, I decided to try it out. I played on a rec/low competition team for the first season, until a coach on the higher level classic team brought me up to play with them. And I’ve been playing club soccer ever since. Soccer in itself has taught me a lot about myself, I am very competitive and I like taking on new challenges. I also like working together with my team to meet a common goal. I used to be introverted, and playing soccer helped me get over it. I was the quiet shy girl on the team and I was scared to make a mistake. In some cases, I had to step up and take on a leadership role or help support someone which made me come out of my shell. This step in my life was extremely important, as communication is a huge factor in soccer. During my high school season, I gained experience in positions I never played before, I also experimented with runs and new moves. That season allowed me to gain confidence and become a better player. I feel my ability to play with whomever, and adapt to certain playing styles is a unique skill. Coaches have said I am very coach-able and eager to learn. I take criticism well and really try to correct the things my coaches point out or say I need to work on. I give 100% into everything I do and I don’t give up. I have respect on and off the field for my teammates, coaches, club, and school.
My academic goals for high school as well as college are to continue my getting good grades throughout, and improve at soccer to become a more well-rounded player. As of right now, I hope to major in Pre-Med or Pharmaceutical Science in hopes of becoming a nurse/doctor or a pharmacist.
