Preparation is critical principle that I lean upon in both academics and athletics. In terms of preparing to become a college student-athlete, I currently attend a high school that is based on a University Model while also playing on a Vista Freedom Soccer Club ranked in the top 25 in the state. As result, the transition to become a college student-athlete will be less of a burden because I am preparing everyday. Some of my academic goals are to achieve good grades, build bridges with my professors and make connections that will help succeed after college.
Through my relationship with my Grandfather Jim Owens and his life story as a Vietnam Veteran and State Police Trooper, I understand the importance of working hard off the field whether that be by striving for better teamwork with the team or just everyday life. I constantly dedicate my effort to be the best me I can be anywhere. I became interested in soccer when I first heard that my father played and all the stories that he had from the sport. I have learned a lot of things through playing soccer. I have learned that I can adapt to various system and/or coaches and I am stronger than I thought. Personally, I have been very fortunate to not have had significant health issues to date. However, one of the obstacles I had to overcome was the fear of playing at 100% during practice and sometimes facing pushback from other players. Fortunately, I have been able to find a team that I can play 100% with and still everybody have fun. My love for this sport overcomes any loss from another team and propel me forward to strive and grow from it.
In terms of unique skills and strengths, coaches have shared that my thinking and decision making is my greatest strength. In addition, I have a natural ability to see the field and find open players. I have played in multiple systems and formations with various coaches. Finally, I feel very fortunate to have competed internationally playing in the Vildbjerg Cup in Denmark and play alongside with some of the most talented girls across Virginia, D.C. and Maryland.
Thank you for viewing my statement and I look forward to communicating my character and skills with you in the future. God bless, Isabella Lugo
