Personal Statement
My name is Emily Goodbar. I have a very strong passion for swimming. I have been swimming since I was two years old. Swimming has always been a big part of my life. At age 11, I joined my club team. I set goals and aspire to reach them. I have been ranked first with Central California Swimming in numerous events. In 2012, I was named Swimmer of the Year for 14 year old girls with Central California Swimming. I represented Central California Swimming at the Western Zone Age Group Swim Championship in Colorado in 2012. I have had a national ranking within my age group in my strong events. I am beginning to swim and compete at National Level meets. In March of 2014, I traveled to Florida and competed at the NCSA Junior National Swim Meet. In April of 2014, I had an incredible opportunity to train with my club team at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Although training in altitude with intensity was tiring, it was also very rewarding. I learned a lot about myself as an individual and as an athlete.
My high school swim coach placed me on the Varsity Swim Team my freshman year. I just completed my third year on Varsity. I was named the MVP for my high school swim team all three years. I have set the 100 fly, 100 back, and 200 IM school records. I also helped set the 200 medley and 400 free relay school records. My high school team has won the Division 2 Championship for two consecutive years and are working toward a third championship during my senior. My team is of high value to me, and I am willing to swim whatever event is necessary in order to boost my team's points. I strive to win and perform at my best.
I am actively involved with my education. I work hard at being my best in the classroom. I currently have a 4.2 GPA. I challenge myself with taking AP and honor classes. During my junior year, I achieved Academic All-American status through USA Swimming. I love challenges and don't like to back down from them. For the past two years, I was selected by my peers and my band instructor to be the Drum Major for our high school band program. Leading my fellow band members comes naturally to me.
I have learned how to set goals, work to achieve them, and then reset them. In the process, I have learned how to overcome obstacles. As a result, I have become a stronger, better person with my life experiences. I am looking forward to swimming at the collegiate level. I set a goal a few years ago to swim in college. I am striving to be my best so that I will have the opportunity to swim at the collegiate level.
