Personal Statement
My name is Emily Chan and I am a 5'5" 125 pounds senior competitive swimmer from Santa Clara, California.
Swimming is a big part of my life. I began swimming at the age of 3 and have been competitively swimming since the age of 10. I have sectional cuts in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly. This year, I competed at the Holiday Festival swim meet in Arizona and won 1st place on the 50 butterfly. In addition, I competed at the Pacific Far Western swim meet and was one of the finalists in 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke. Top swimmers from California, Arizona, Canada, Illinois, Texas and Mexico competed at this meet.
Along with swimming everyday all year long, I am also a hardworking student in school. My average GPA is a 4.0. I am a studious individual who cares about grades and school work. I always give my best effort on all of my assignments and projects.
Because I take honors and AP classes during the school year, I am only able to attend swim practice once a day. However, I still have been able to improve at swim meets. Last year, I improved three places in both my 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle at Central California Swimming (CCS). When I swim in college, I am sure I will continue to improve all my swimming times.
I realize I have started this recruiting process late, but I want to pursue swimming in college and am open to opportunities at all divisions. I am looking for a college where I can find a fair balance between the classroom and pool. I am open to both big and small colleges, public or private. I am still undecided on my major.
My athletic goals are to make more sectional cuts and compete as a freshman in college. In college, I plan to attend every available swim practice to maximize my swimming potential. I hope to continue to excel in academics, as well as in the pool.
