Sports have been essential to my emotional and physical development. I started practicing Jiu-Jitsu when I was 6 years old and soccer when I was 9 years old. Then at 13, I switched from soccer to swimming and kept practicing Jiu Jitsu.
At a very young age, I have been learning and applying the 753 code from Jiu Jitsu to live a healthier life and use efficiently my physical, mental, and spiritual strength. Some of the 753 Code values are benevolence, respect, honesty, loyalty, courage, rest, hygiene, nutrition, mental well-being, and exercise, among others.
As a Jiu Jitsu warrior, I'm able to achieve an awareness of mind to take on challenges in school, swimming, and personal matters. This awareness state of mind includes zanshin (alertness), mushin (clear mind), and fudoshin (emotional balance.)
Combining Jiu Jitsu with swimming has helped me to achieve remarkable results even though I'm a newcomer to the sport. During this short period, I've confirmed to myself, my varsity team, and my swimming club that I'm a disciplined, coachable, and resilient athlete who doesn't fear any obstacles. At the same time, I've learned how to successfully manage academics, volunteering work, swimming, Jiu-Jitsu, conditioning training, and social life while keeping an emotional balance.
Being a swimmer has been exigent yet rewarding. I'm working every day to improve my swimming techniques, skills, and times to continue swimming in college.
