Personal Statement

My parents have had the largest impact on who I am today. Growing up I was raised on the belief that things aren't simply handed to you in life, you must work for them.  With this in mind I continue to work tirelessly to achieve my goals. Swimming and the people I have met because of it have also helped shape me into the person I am today.  I have experienced the pain and energy it takes to get a seemingly minuscule result. The constant training and studying has taught me to be patient and manage my time wisely.  Around the age of eight, I began swim lessons and it took me until the age of eleven to truly enjoy swimming.  At age eleven I switched swim teams to Lane Four Aquatics, on which I still compete. The competitive atmosphere was exhilarating and I haven't stopped swimming since.  Academically, I am my own competition. I push myself to be the best student I can be. I do this by setting goals and holding myself accountable. Currently, I am working to maintain the highest GPA possible while still taking rigorous courses. I will continue to pursue this goal throughout college as well. The barriers I have faced throughout my lifetime have been mostly emotional. I learned early on the importance of a positive mindset. As a young girl I learned that you can work hard every day of the year but a negative mindset can quickly ruin an end of season meet. Learning how to have a positive mindset helped me become a leader at practice. When everyone is seemingly negative, I do my best to keep everyone positive and motivated. I intend to use all of these lessons and skills and combine them with all of the new experiences I will have in college to further grow as a person and teammate.
